Seven Days of Promoting Others Meme – Day 7

Per snickfic:

“And now, to complement the self-reccing meme, a meme for reccing things made by other people!”

The Days:
1. Something old
2. Something new
3. Something for your fav character/pairing
4. Something for a character you don’t like / pairing you don’t ship
5. Something that’s underappreciated by the universe
6. Something that’s underappreciated by the universe

Something you reread/rewatch/look at again:

By this point, almost everything I’ve named in this meme would qualify. To avoid simply repeating myself, however, another choice is … well, the précis of that would be, just about anything by yahtzee63.

I first encountered Yahtzee in “Acid Test”, and this apparently was my first experience with someone capturing the characters’ voices so perfectly that it might as well have been an actual canon episode. She wound up writing more in Angel fandom than in Buffy (though several stories combine the two); I’ve read and enjoyed most of them, and most are eminently suitable for re-reading on a regular basis. She’s best known for “Phoenix Burning” and “As Time Goes By”, both excellent — and I found myself unexpectedly affected by “On the Education of a Young Man” — but in the long term, one I keep going back to, even though I didn’t like it that much in the beginning, is “the Uninvited Guest”. This one rewards re-reading in that you’ll enjoy it so much more the second time through, and every time after that you just bask in the skill and effectiveness of the writing.

Your mileage may vary, but going with yahtzee63 is never a mistake.

Thanks for that rec. I'm adding her to my "to read" list.

Have you seriously never read Yahtzee before now?

Poor, poor baby.

Not that I recall, no. But in a sense I'm lucky since, after all this time, there's someone completely new to me whose work I can discover.

Trust me, there’s nobody better than Yahtzee. She’s so good it’s heartbreaking. Even when she writes something that doesn’t appeal to you at all (for me, that’s slash), there’s still no escaping how WELL she does it, be it mainline Buffy, later Alias, or even the one-off for Remington Steele. (She did a Snape/Hermione fic, “the Bloody Stare of Mars”, that was not only astonishingly good but utterly plausible.) Yahtzee is the yardstick against which all who know her measure themselves.

In other words, you’re in for a treat.

Ah yes, I have very fond memories of reading Acid Test.

And “Acid Test” was by no means Yahtzee’s best story … though, if I had written it, it would certainly rate as one of MY best.
