Seven Days of Promoting Others Meme – Day 3

The Days:
1. Something old
2. Something new

Something for your fav character/pairing:

Me and pairings, not so much. I read them occasionally, I write them less often, but I don’t need them at all. When it comes to characters, though, there’s no question who’s my favorite: Xander, with no close competition. There have been a lot of good Xander stories, and I’m not even going to TRY to narrow it down to just one.

A continuing pleasure is “Slay Hard” by m_mcgregor. A conscious and effective re-telling of the first Die Hard movie, this one was also a minor Highlander crossover (in the sense of using that show’s mythos without any of its characters), and quite rightly put Xander in the John McClane role. (And the description of Xander by Angelus is still one of my favorite Buffy fanfic moments.) Fun from beginning to end, with lots of good stuff throughout.

Incredibly good, in so many ways I can’t begin to count, is “Father Goose and the Black Knight”, by Litmouse. It’s a Buffy/Law & Order: SVU crossover; the formatting and spelling drive me crazy all over the place, but the story is so solid throughout, with hundreds of good moments and almost as many fantastic insights, it almost leaves me in awe.

Finally: even though it’s not A story, the Twisting the Hellmouth series “Oh, the Places He Goes!” is a long-running treat. Posted by phouka, the stories were (she freely acknowledges) written by her brother; each one is a crossover with a different fandom, and it stretches out over 28 stories and 185,000 words. One — toward the middle — is rather grim, but all the rest are funny, and entertaining, and respectful to the other fandoms. I re-read them on a regular basis, and always enjoy doing so.

It’s only a coincidence that everything I named here was a crossover. Plenty of good non-crossover Xander stuff, these are just the ones I specifically remember.

4. Something for a character you don’t like / pairing you don’t ship
5. Something that’s underappreciated by the universe
6. Something that’s a gateway drug
7. Something you reread/rewatch/look at again

I tend to be a non-crossover sort of gal, but I agree that there are some great Xander writers out there. I know you, like me, are a sparrow2000 fan, so I trust your taste completely on the writers you just listed.

Every installment in the “Oh, the Places He Goes!” series is Xander-heavy, so I think you’ll find yourself enjoying it, and “Father Goose and the Black Knight” is just plain fantastic, plus being one of the best Xander stories out there. Reading those would be you doing a favor for yourself. Enjoy.

It's no secret that Xander is also my favourite character to write. I love Father Goose and the Black Knight, it's one of my go to stories when I'm feeling down. I've read some of the Oh, the Places He Goes stories but not all. And while I've read a few things by m_mcgregor, I admit I've never read Slay Hard, a fact that I will have to rectify very soon, so thank you very much for the rec!

If you get half as much pleasure there as I did, you’ll still be way ahead. Best of luck.
